Police: Seneca Falls man crashed car with child inside, found to be intoxicated

On Saturday at 9:18 pm the Seneca County 911 Center received a call reporting a single-car motor vehicle crash on State Route 5 in front of the Stanton Meadows apartment complex.

The Town of Seneca Falls Police Department responded along with assistance from the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival there was no one inside the vehicle, witnesses provided a description and direction of travel for the driver who had left the scene.

As a result of the investigation, Seneca Falls Police arrested Joseph A. Meldrum, 28, of Seneca Falls. Police say he admitted to operating the motor vehicle, while intoxicated, with a one-year-old child in the vehicle.

Meldrum was charged with driving while intoxicated; aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child (Leandra’s Law), and aggravated driving while intoxicated for having a BAC of 0.18 percent or more.

He was processed and arraigned in the Town of Seneca Falls Court where he was remanded to the Seneca County Correctional Facility. He will remain there in lieu of $2,500 cash bail.

Also, as a result of the arrest Meldrum violated his terms and conditions of NYS Parole. A separate detainer was filed remanding Meldrum to the correctional facility on no bail.

He is due back in town court on November 22nd, 2017, at 9:30 am.
