Port Byron hunter dies after falling from tree stand

A 54-year-old Port Byron hunter was killed over the weekend, after falling from a tree stand, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Gale Lytle, 54, of Port Byron fell from his stand while he was in a wooded area off of Center Rd. in the Town of Scipio.

Investigators say the stand malfunctioned, which caused him to fall before he even got to the top of the tree stand. He fell to the ground and suffered injuries.

Deputies say he was by himself in the immediate location, but two other hunters were in the area, but were not within earshot or eye-shot of the incident.

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office is performing an autopsy.
