Crossing Main Street in the village may become safer with the addition of flashing crosswalk lights to be installed at the crosswalk near the minipark in the block between Elm Street and Maiden Lane. The village board has agreed to purchase solar powered flashing signs at a cost of $5310, to be funded by a statewide electric utility group, Independent Energy Efficiency Program.
Village officials also are looking into reducing the speed limit on Main Street between the post office and Lake Street to 20 mph to improve safety. Village officials briefly discussed ways to calm traffic in the downtown area at the Nov. 21 board meeting, with the lowered speed limit one of the potential options. The street is part of the state touring highway system, so state officials may have a say in any changes.
