When Tim Sincebaugh answered a phone call in August, he assumed it was just another telemarketer.
The Auburn mechanic was working at his shop, Sincebaugh Automotive, when he received the call from a woman advising him that he had won an award from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, or ASE. Sincebaugh, she said, was voted Master Automobile Technician of the Year.
But Sincebaugh was skeptical.
"As you can imagine, I get a lot of calls that are scams from telemarketers," he said. "So she said, 'Let me email you some information,' and I could tell from her email address that it looked legitimate."
