Man sentenced to prison for stealing puppy from Auburn SPCA

A Union Springs man will spend time in prison for stealing a 10-week-old puppy from the Finger Lakes SPCA.

In May, William Butler said he tried to adopt a pit bull puppy named Lil Jed. But, after the SPCA denied his request, he decided to break into the York Street shelter and take the dog on his own.

The SPCA said Lil Jed had come to the shelter as an owner surrender in April. He was not available for adoption at the time because he did not have all of the required vaccines.

Following several tips from the public, the Auburn Police Department found the puppy two days later at Butler’s residence at 636 Farley Point Road. Officers said Lil Jed was recovered unharmed.
