HOLIDAY WEATHER UPDATE: Tricky travel conditions as NWS issues advisories

The National Weather Service called it complicated on Saturday.

While the region isn’t expected to see any massive accumulation of snow, or other precipitation at one time over the next 48 hours of this holiday weekend, the weather is going to present some challenges for those traveling.

The National Weather Service has activated Winter Weather Advisories for transitioning weather, which will feature rain, freezing rain or sleet, as well as accumulating snow. Expect the transition period to be during the afternoon hours, with patchy ice being the main concern on secondary roads. The rainfall from early-Saturday will cause much of the snow on the ground now to become water-logged and heavy, so be cautious shoveling.

Winter Weather Advisory Details

WHERE: Cayuga, Onondaga, Ontario, Monroe, Wayne, and Yates counties
WHEN: Until 7 pm on Saturday
WHAT: 2-4 inches of snow; up to two-tenths of icing. Precipitation mix of snow and ice means evolving conditions that could vary by the mile.

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day

The National Weather Service and other local forecasters are coming together on what is expected Sunday. The daytime hours will present the best travel period for those looking to get around on Christmas Eve Day. During the evening hours, and into the overnight — conditions will worsen. Forecasters are predicting just a few inches of snowfall for those living in the Finger Lakes. While those living along Lake Ontario will see more. Those in the Western Finger Lakes are also expected to see more snowfall, according to the National Weather Service.

No advisories or warnings have been issued yet, but as those updates are provided — FingerLakes1.com will be bringing them to you here.
