Those who can tolerate Thursday’s frigid temperatures have truly acclimated to winter in New York.
Forecasters say this is some of the coldest weather the region has experienced in a couple winters, and the pro-longed nature of the event, spanning several days – makes it one of the longest stretches of Arctic weather we’ve seen in about as long.
FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil says sub-zero wind chills will be the norm throughout the day, as temperatures struggle to rise through the single-digits. Northwest wind gusts will persist throughout the day, and fall in the range of 25 to 35 mph.
The warmest places in the region will get to about 10 degrees, according to Montreuil.
The lake effect snow will be all but halted due to the extreme cold. Although a few lake effect flurries cannot be ruled out.
Friday and Saturday will feature a slight warmup, which will mean high temps in the low-20s. However, another bitter cold snap is expected to ring in the New Year, which will mean difficulty for those looking to head outside on New Years Eve.
Montreuil says that highs on Sunday will again be in the single-digits, with windchills going as low as -20 Sunday evening.
