After surpassing its fundraising goal for 2017, a grassroots organization that supports Yates County residents with cancer is offering grants of up to $500 for those patients.
Hope Walk of Yates County, a nonprofit group of community members passionate about raising money and awareness of cancer support services in the area, is taking grant applications. Members of the organization’s board of directors include Marty and Dawn Shipman; the latter is a breast cancer survivor.
Other board members include Pat Moravec and Ron Miller. They said more than 20 grants were given out over the last several months on a case-by-case basis, and now the group is ready to accept formal applications.
The organization raised nearly $45,000 in 2017, exceeding its $40,000 goal. Its main fundraiser and signature event is the “Hope Walk,” which has been held the last two years behind the Yates Recreational & Resource Center on North Main Street in Penn Yan — in an area known as Stork Fields.
