Cayuga County Treasurer: Airbnb tax agreement a ‘big step forward’

The Cayuga County Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee voted unanimously for a tax collection agreement between the county and Airbnb, an online booking site for private room and home rentals.

If the resolution passes the full Legislature on Jan. 23, Airbnb rentals will have a hotel tax added to their bills, funds which will support the county’s office of tourism.

County Treasurer Jim Orman gave legislators more background on the agreement Tuesday night, calling it a “big step forward.”

“We get this question quite often, and now it’s hopefully resolved,” he said. “Other counties do it. They say it’s almost too easy, which I don’t want to say,” he added, laughing.
