NY Senate GOP eyes more state funding for Lake Ontario flood relief

State Senate Republicans want additional funding to assist communities and residents affected by Lake Ontario flooding last year.

The senators pledged $5 million from the State and Municipal Facilities program to help the flood relief effort. They also want Gov. Andrew Cuomo to transfer $11 million from a small business grant program to boost aid for homeowners.

"Our Senate Republican majority is committed to each and every one of the residents whose homes were devastated as a result of the flooding that occurred in and around Lake Ontario," Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said Thursday. "These funds are important and necessary, and are only one part of what the state must do to fulfill all of its obligation to those who were affected."

Last year, the state passed a $45 million grant program to assist businesses, local governments and residents affected by flooding. But state officials agree that more assistance is needed, especially for homeowners.
