Deputies say a Clifton Springs man was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Rt. 488 in Hopewell.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement and firefighters were dispatched to the report of a serious accident on Route 488 just west of Pettit Road. Emergency personnel arrived to find a 2008 Chevrolet HHR off the north side of the roadway with a deceased male inside.
Initial investigation revealed that the driver, identified as Kenneth A. Barber, 63, of Clifton Springs was traveling east on Route 488 when his vehicle left the east side of the roadway — striking a tree. The vehicle then launched into a second tree, which caused even more extensive damage to it.

Barber was pronounced dead at the scene by Ontario County Coroner Mike John. Investigators say that the coroner requested that the victim be transported to Geneva General Hospital for an autopsy.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim may have suffered a medical problem or illness. Alcohol or drug use is also not expected to be a factor at this time.
The roadway was closed for three hours, according to officials, as crews worked tirelessly at the scene.
