Wayne holds off Penn Yan after Blankenberg injured; South Seneca girls win 9th straight (W-FL round-up 1/30)

The Penn Yan Mustangs were put to the test in their last two games facing the two teams above them in the Finger Lakes East standings over the past 5 days. On Saturday night, the Mustangs lost at home to Mynderse. Tuesday night they travelled to face league-leaders Wayne and saw their upset bid fall short, 42-36.

Wayne’s big man Nick Carmichael was saddled with foul trouble most of the game but the Eagles were bolstered by the long-awaited return of senior Braeden Zenelovic who was injured during football season. In limited action, Zenelovic scored 4 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Unfortunately for Wayne, the return of one key player coincided with the potential loss of another as junior Logan Blankenberg left the game in the 3rd quarter with a knee injury after scoring 10 points and recording 16 rebounds. Junior point guard Billy Thompson led Wayne with 17 points on the night.

Wayne improved to 9-0 in Finger Lakes East play and 12-1 overall. Penn Yan dropped to 6-3 in league play and 11-4 overall.

The Mynderse Blue Devils kept pace with league-leading Wayne standing just 1/2 game back after dispatching with cross-town rival Waterloo, 72-33. Devin Anderson led Mynderse with 14 points while Hunter Haust and Jesse Kabat added 11 each.  Darren Miller scored 9 points and Quintin Battle scored 8 points. Ten Blue Devils scored in the game.

Julian Ruiz and Mike Hubbard led Waterloo with 8 points. Mynderse held Waterloo junior Derek Slywka to 6 points in the game following his 40 point outburst in the Indians’ triple-overtime win against Newark.

The only other Wayne-Finger Lakes game on Tuesday night was between Newark and Pal-Mac. No score was reported as of 12:30 AM.

In girls action on Tuesday night…

The South Seneca Lady Falcons gave head coach Heather Mott a perfect birthday gift when they won their ninth straight game defeating rival Romulus on Tuesday night, 59-43, in a game that was streamed live on FL1 Sports. Jade Parsons recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Jenna McDonald scored 12 and freshman Logan Shaulis scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. After the win McDonald and Skylar Shaulis joined FL1 Sports’ Dave Barnick on the Dr. Rod Littlejohn Smiles with Style postgame show.
