One of the most explosive movie musicals of the 1980s bursts onto the live stage this week in Dundee High School’s production of Footloose!
When Ren (Josh Kane) and his mother (Adele Fishbaugh) move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher (Colin Howell), determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter Ariel (Michelle Conner) sets her sights on Ren, her tough-guy boyfriend (Collin Goodman) tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid.
With a heartfelt story set to the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top-40 score, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.
Footloose first burst onto the silver screen in 1984, starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, and John Lithgow, and was one of the most successful motion pictures that year. With screenplay and lyrics by Oscar-winner Dean Pitchford, author of the equally successful movie musical, Fame, the Footloose soundtrack reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and went on to sell over 17 million copies worldwide, generating such top 40 hits as “Footloose,” “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” (both receiving Oscar nominations), “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out For A Hero,” and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man).”
