Auburn’s State Street lot receives clean bill of health from environmental consultants

The former site of the Kalet’s department store in Auburn is slated to be redeveloped as a public park, but the plan could face a legal challenge from an Auburn attorney who filed multiple lawsuits against a prior project planned for the site.

The property, located at 1-7 State St., was previously the proposed site for the Schwartz Family Performing Arts Center, which would have been used by both Cayuga Community College and the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival. However, that plan was scrapped in 2014 after attorney and neighboring property owner Joseph Camardo Jr. filed multiple lawsuits alleging the site’s environmental assessment was not properly conducted. The lot has sat vacant since the department store was demolished in 2011.
