Seneca County District Attorney Barry Porsch has been named a special prosecutor in the latest allegation against embattled Rochester Judge Leticia Astacio.
State Supreme Court Justice Craig Doran confirmed Monday that he assigned Porsch to prosecute a recent felony charge against Judge Leticia Astacio. Doran is administrative judge for the 7th Judicial District, which covers Monroe County and much of the Finger Lakes area.
“The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office has a conflict for a variety of reasons,” Doran told the Finger Lakes Times. “The DA there made an application to me on the felony charge filed, so we assigned a special prosecutor.”
Astacio’s legal troubles have been heavily publicized in Rochester media, after an initial DWI conviction in 2016. While she was placed on probation for that conviction – Astacio has been accused repeatedly of violating the terms.
Porsch will be prosecuting Astacio on a charge of attempted criminal purchase or disposal of a weapon. The charge stems from Astacio allegedly trying to purchase a shotgun at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Henrietta on April 2, a violation of her probation.
Meanwhile, the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office has been handling the probation violation allegations.
On Tuesday, Astacio was removed from the bench by the state.
