The sign on the Fishers Ridge project site off Route 96, near Lane Road in Victor, says “Bass Pro Shops, the Great American Outdoor Store,” coming soon.
But it won’t happen too soon, if at all.
“We have temporarily placed this project on hold to assess our plans and timing,” said Katie Mitchell, communications manager for Bass Pro Shops Group, in an issued statement. “We remain in close contact with local officials and developers and may well proceed with the project at a future time to be determined. We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this review.”
Mitchell declined to elaborate.
John DiMarco II, president of the DiMarco Group that is developing the 96-acre site, said his company continues to meet with Bass Pro Shops on a regular basis, including as recently as this month.
The project was placed on hold in response to Bass Pro Shops acquiring Cabela’s, its largest competitor, DiMarco said. The acquisition was in the works when the first phase of the multiuse project was approved last April by the Victor Town Planning Board.
The $4 billion purchase of Cabela’s, another sporting goods store, was finalized in September, according to published reports.
“We have been in dialogue with them since we got site plan approval,” DiMarco said. “They’ve said consistently that they’re working through their plans on the future integration of their two chains. I think their whole program is on hold. We’re comfortable as we continue to work on advancing the project.”
Bass Pro came to DiMarco and said the company was in the middle of acquiring Cabela’s.
