Demolition efforts are moving ahead on a historic but deteriorated building on the campus of what is now called the Cornell AgriTech at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station.
The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has issued a request for proposals for demolition of Parrott Hall. Built in 1852, it was the first building on what became the experiment station campus.
Randy Simons, a spokesman for the agency, said the “RFP is the next step of what we have been very upfront about (the building’s demolition).”
He said that after “extensive exploration of possible options, we have concluded that Parrott Hall is beyond rehabilitation or repair, and we are currently working with our consultants and the community to identify new interpretative uses for the site.”
He acknowledged that “there are many emotions with this project and we understand fully. However, health and safety are paramount at this time. We believe, once we are to this stage, that the new interpretative use for the site will be well received.”
