Authorities say a 33-year-old Newark resident was arrested on charges related to a welfare fraud investigation on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m.
Dangia M. McKinney, 33, was arrested after an investigation was initiated by the Wayne County Department of Social Services when it was discovered that she was possibly not reporting income while collecting benefits.
After reviewing employment records — investigators determined that McKinney was not reporting additional income to her residence brought in by her children’s father. As result, since November 2017 — she was able to obtain $553 worth of SNAP benefits, which she was not entitled to receive.
McKinney was subsequently charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, fifth-degree welfare fraud, and petit larceny.
She was issued appearance tickets and released. The charges will be answered at a later date.
