The Herman Avenue Elementary School playground was closed by the city school district Friday over safety concerns, but plans are already underway to replace the equipment there.
District superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo said personnel with Parkitechs, a company which sells and installs playground equipment, determined the Herman playground equipment wasn’t safe, so the playground was closed immediately. Pirozzolo said it was determined the equipment’s parts are obsolete so they couldn’t be replaced.
The district had been planning to install a new Parkitechs swing set, and the company came by Friday to advise where the swing set should have been placed when workers found bolts that had broken through the fiberglass of some equipment and cracks in other equipment.
The district had been monitoring the equipment over the years, Pirozzolo said, and the playground passed a safety inspection by a Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES safety coordinator last summer.
