Hundreds of volunteers recently lined the rain-dampened race route to cheer on runners at the fourth annual Canandaigua Classic Half Marathon and 5K.
Volunteers came from 17 athletic booster and activity clubs at Canandaigua Academy, who in return for volunteering received an equal portion of proceeds from the event. Students, parents, coaches and supporters of each group each were responsible for 1 mile of the half marathon or 5K course.
“The sheer number of people cheering along our route is what makes the Canandaigua Classic so special for the runners,” said Taryn Windheim, race director, who has organized the event since 2015. “Thirteen miles is a long way to run. Having someone there on the sidelines cheering you on nearly the entire way makes a huge difference, especially on those tough uphill climbs.”
