Penn Yan boards hear ideas for parks

The Penn Yan Village and Planning Boards held joint meetings May 15 so they could all see a presentation by Cornell University students about suggestions for updates to the Village Park Master Plan, which was last updated in 2010.

The students from DesignConnect Studio said one of the major objectives of the master plan is for the village have a plan that will help secure grant funding. “The goal is to provide a document that doesn’t just sit on a shelf,” said one of the presenters.

The group recommends the following projects:

Small Scale: Include bike racks and buggy hitches at all village parks; increase seating at the boat launch park.

Medium Scale: Update the Lake Street playground, improve parking at the Elm Street Sports Complex; make repairs to the Red Jacket beach.

Large Scale: A bridge over the Keuka Outlet Trail between Indian Pines Park and the pathway to Red Jacket Park; continue efforts to establish a Marsh Walk, but also consider a secondary nature trail in the Elm Street Sports Complex area; Connect the Yates Cultural and Recreational Resources property to the Outlet Trail along Jacobs Brook.

The students will provide the village with a final report, which will be referred to the Village Planning Board for formalization.
