Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival opens June 16

The Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival (FLCMF) opens its summer season at 7:30 p.m, Saturday, June 16 at Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport.

Guest artists, the Abel Family String Quartet from Indianapolis, and FLCMF artistic director, Richard Auldon Clark, on viola, will perform two music masterpieces: Mozart’s String Quintet in D major, K. 593, and Mendelssohn’s Quintet in B flat major, Opus 87.

As told by Alfred Abel, “The Abel Family Quartet is the result of a diabolical plot conceived and executed by Colette Abel without the advice or consent of her husband, Alfred, who naively failed to realize for almost 10 years that their children would eventually help them comprise a multi-generational string quartet, elevating family squabbles to an entirely more exalted plane: “Quartet Wars!”

The family first performed publicly as a string quartet in Corelli’s Christmas Concerto. Violinist Benjamin was 9 years old. Cellist Clara was 7. In recent years, the Abel Family Quartet has performed on chamber music concerts in their home state of Indiana, in Ohio, W. Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, and in New York City.
