The Penn Yan Police Department was called to Penn Yan Middle School on Monday around 7:45 a.m. after a student found a .22 caliber bullet in the school’s auditorium. The student notified staff at the school, which resulted in an immediate search.
Penn Yan Police, Yates County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to the school and conducted a search of the building and did not locate anything further.
The school was placed on temporary lockdown as investigators searched, but normal activities resumed after it concluded.
Penn Yan Police Chief Tom Dunham noted there were events in the auditorium over the weekend, and it is not known who brought the ammunition into the school.
