Contractor admits failure to obtain workers’ comp while repairing Cayuga County home

A contractor from Seneca County was ordered to pay more than $8,000 in restitution and fines for failing to provide workers’ compensation insurance during a siding and roof repair job in Aurelius.

Stephen Pollot, 37, of 907 Waterloo-Geneva Road, Waterloo, pleaded guilty Tuesday to failure to secure the legally required coverage, a class E felony under Workers’ Compensation Law. During his plea, the owner of D&S Home Improvements-Property Maintenance admitted to failing to obtain insurance for seven employees in June 2015.

Cayuga County Chief Assistant District Attorney Chris Valdina discussed the case in court Tuesday, noting that Pollot was initially investigated by New York State Police for fraud and larceny after an Aurelius homeowner filed a complaint. Then, Valdina said, the Inspector General’s Office got involved, as authorities discovered the contractor had not insured his employees during that project, which lasted from June to September 2015.
