Rochester native Gap Mangione and his New Big Band will mark their return to Keuka College Saturday, July 21, when they perform at Keuka College’s Concert in the Park for the second consecutive year.
He will be joined by Penn Yan native Cindy Miller, who is celebrating 26 years of singing with the Gap Mangione Big Band.
The band will play a selection of “Mostly Mangione Music,” spanning nearly 60 years of music composed, arranged, and recorded by Gap or his brother, Chuck.
Free and open to the public, the concert begins at 7 p.m. on Norton Chapel lawn. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be in the chapel. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets, and concessions will be available for purchase.
Gap was born to a close, music-loving family, where he and Chuck began performing together. By the time Gap was 13, he was playing the blues on the family piano, and encouraging Chuck to join him.
Two years later, he was writing and arranging for local big bands, as well as playing in semiprofessional groups.
During his college days at Syracuse University, he was house pianist at the Three Rivers Inn Theater Restaurant, and played in big bands accompanying the likes of Sammy Davis Jr. and Nat King Cole.
