On Wednesday at about 2:50 pm the Canandaigua City Police Department responded to the report of a bicyclist struck by a motor vehicle on South Main Street, in the area of the Byrne Dairy.
Upon investigation, it was determined that a vehicle traveling southbound, in the passing lane, had stopped at the marked crosswalk in order to yield the right of way to a female bicyclist.
The female bicyclist was westbound, crossing South Main Street, in the marked crosswalk prior to the accident.
Christopher Catt, 26, of Victor overtook the vehicle that had stopped in the passing lane at the marked crosswalk. Catt serves as chief of staff for New York State Senator Pam Helming (R-Canandaigua).
He then entered the crosswalk, striking the female bicyclist. The female bicyclist struck the windshield of Catt’s vehicle and was thrown forward into the roadway.
The female bicyclist sustained serious injuries and lacerations to both her head and arm.
She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
Catt was issued tickets for failure to yield the right of way and overtaking a motor vehicle that was stopped at a marked crosswalk.
He will also be cited for using a mobile phone while operating a motor vehicle, and additional charges are being considered.
