LATEST: Branchport man arrested hours before violent attack on woman

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike has identified and outlined the charges filed against a 37-year-old Branchport resident, who violated attacked a 67-year-old female domestic violence victim.

Paul M. Khouzam, 37, of Guyanoga Road was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree burglary, and aggravated cruelty to an animal – all felonies.

Khouzam is accused of forcefully breaking into a home in Dresden, and violently attacking a 67-year-old victim. Spike says the victim was bludgeoned and stabbed multiple times. She was found unconscious and bleeding in the basement of the home.

Penn Yan Police assisted at the scene, and Penn Yan Ambulance transported the victim to a landing zone, where she was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Spike says the victim was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, and is listed in guarded condition at this time.

Spike also says Khouzam killed a small dog inside the home, which resulted in the animal cruelty charge.

The Sheriff’s Office says that the suspect in this case had just been arrested on Sunday around 7:22 pm. The entire incident this morning unfolded between 4 and 5 am on Monday.

Khouzam had been arrested by deputies as a mentally ill person, and was taken to Soldiers & Sailors Hospital. He was released from the hospital later in the evening to his home address. Hours later he drove to the Arrowhead Beach address where the incident took place; and forcefully entered.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Spike.
