An educator who dealt with an American tragedy first-hand is set to speak in Weedsport.
Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal of Columbine High School in Colorado at the time of the 1999 shootings, will hold a community forum Wednesday at Weedsport Junior-Senior High School, according to a press release. DeAngelis speaks internationally to various school and professional audiences about recovery in the wake of a school tragedy. He will also speak to the students and staff before the forum.
The shootings, in which two gunmen killed 12 students and one teacher, sparked a cultural conversation on gun control, school safety and violence in popular culture.
National mass shooting research expert Jaclyn Schildkraut will also speak with students and staff earlier in the day Wednesday but will not be speaking publicly. Weedsport principal Brett Fingland said in the press release he is pleased DeAngelis and Schildkraut are coming to the school.
