‘Local roads matter’: At Auburn forum, local officials call for more state funding

Don Wilson Jr. believes the village of Cayuga and other Cayuga County municipalities are in trouble, and he doesn’t see the state prioritizing these communities for infrastructure funding.

Meanwhile, the state is investing millions in the fairgrounds. Wilson, a Cayuga village trustee, questioned why that money wasn’t given to local governments to upgrade bridges, roads and other infrastructure.

“The money would go a lot further,” he said. “This area is in dire need of updating.”

Wilson and other local government officials shared feedback at a regional forum Wednesday at the Cayuga County Highway Garage in Auburn. The forum was organized by the Assembly Minority Task Force on Critical Infrastructure and Transportation.

The task force, which kicked off its forums with a meeting in Binghamton Tuesday, is chaired by state Assembly members Kevin Byrne and Phil Palmesano. Assembly members Will Barclay and Gary Finch joined their colleagues for the Auburn forum.
