Casella still working to correct landfill violations in Ontario County

Casella Waste Services has corrected or is in the process of correcting most of the seven violations it has been cited for at the Ontario County Landfill.

Since April 2017, the state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued Casella and the county seven Notices of Violations of its operating permit to run the 389-acre landfill on behalf of the county.

In a report to the Planning and Environmental Quality Committee of the Board of Supervisors Monday, County Planner Tim Jensen said Casella has completed making corrections for violations involving contaminated storm water and leachate, caused by a storm water runoff that contacted trash that was contained in a temporary storm water pond.

Jensen also said repairs to a cracked leachate collection system manhole has been repaired and tested.

Some of the violations have been fully resolved, such as inadequate daily cover. However, many will be resolved only after continued effort over many months, such as final slope stabilization, Jensen said in his report to the committee.
