Upstate New York native crossed paths with pipe bomb suspect, recorded van in July

An Upstate New York native knew something was off when he recorded a white van covered in political stickers in July.

“I filmed it and a few months later, here it is on national news,” said Michael Hebert, a Harrisville, New York native who now lives in the Ft. Lauderdale area.

Hebert posted videos to Facebook Friday that he took on July 18 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It shows a white van, covered in political stickers, that Hebert would frequently see parked outside of his gym.

“I knew for some reason that van wasn’t normal,” Hebert said.

He said it’s the same van police seized Friday when they arrested 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc, of Aventura Florida in connection to the mail bomb investigation.

“When I saw the van on TV today, I knew it was the same one,” Hebert told CNYCentral Friday afternoon. “And I knew exactly why.”

Sayoc is facing federal charges for allegedly sending at least 13 bombs in the mail to prominent democrats like former President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Hebert said he initially posted the videos on Instagram at the end of July because he likes to share odd things he sees in Florida. He told CNYCentral his friend, who is a diplomat at the State Department, asked Hebert to send the clips to him.
