Law enforcement talk holiday safety at Eastview Mall event

Big crowds. Cold, dark nights. Lots of stress, but also lots of good times meeting up with friends and family while crossing gifts off your shopping list.

The holiday shopping season is here again, and with it, the potential for crime, if you’re not paying attention.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and Eastview Mall security team are providing a host of holiday shopping safety tips that will hopefully make the season bright for all shoppers.

Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said his deputies and the mall want to promote an environment of safety, including for senior citizens who may be more susceptible to scams and safety concerns associated with colder weather.

“We live in an age where we need to be aware of what is going on around us,” Povero said.

One way to guard against crime is following a few, common-sense safety tips.

Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Baker, who is assigned to the mall, suggested shoppers park in well-lit areas and make sure vehicle doors are locked and any items inside are hidden from plain sight.
