After defrauding 20 people out of $140K, Beaver Dams man will spend 3 years behind bars

A Beaver Dams resident will spend three years in prison after being sentenced in a rental scam case.

Federal prosecutors say 58-year-old Henry Dean III, of Beaver Dams in Schuyler County, was sentenced Tuesday for his conviction on wire fraud charges.

Prosecutors accused Dean of defrauding about 20 people out of nearly $140,000 between 2014 and 2016 by offering vacation properties in the Finger Lakes region for rent.

He would advertise the property — then accept a down payment. However, he didn’t own the properties involved, or they were undergoing construction, which made them impossible to rent.

He then refused to pay back the funds he took from the individual vacationers who sought the homes for rent.

Dean was also ordered to pay back more than $100,000.
