Eastview Mall Sunday was swarmed with kids and cops, joining together for a good cause. The fifth-annual Shop with a Cop (formerly called Shop with a Sheriff) drew local law enforcement and a number of firefighters who teamed up with 31 local students for the event.
The kids in bright red “Shop with a Cop” T-shirts made their way around the mall in Victor Sunday morning, a law officer or firefighter by their side. There were gifts to be bought for brothers and sisters, moms and dads, and the kids themselves enjoyed treats and perhaps the purchase of something they needed.
The program sponsored by the nonprofit Ontario County Police Benevolent Association is possible thanks to donors and participants. The event pairs a child from participating school districts with a program volunteer. Volunteers are members of State Police Troop E, City of Canandaigua and Geneva Police departments, or the Ontario County Sheriff’s general unit. This year volunteers also included members of Fishers Fire Department.
“Each year we look forward to this event and are grateful for the continued support from each of the agencies involved,” said OCPBA President Bill Wellman. Community groups such as Kiwanis and others continue to help fund the event and “truly believe in the program,” Wellman said.
