Auburn PD says ‘no’ to skateboarding downtown

The Auburn Police Department has a message for skateboarders who have been doing tricks outside the new Equal Rights Heritage Center downtown: Stop it.

The APD said Wednesday that a set of stairs near the intersection of South and Lincoln streets has become a popular spot for skateboarders to perform jumps from. The activity is not only dangerous, police said, it’s against the law.

Skateboards, inline skates, bicycles and other wheeled devices are prohibited from sidewalks and public walkways downtown, and violators can be fined as much as $100.

“We at the Auburn Police Department are big fans of outdoor recreation and encourage our residents to engage in such productive activities whenever possible,” police chief Shawn Butler said in a statement, “but we also want these activities conducted in a safe and lawful manner.

Butler said the department is trying to protect the safety of pedestrians and protect property from unnecessary damage.
