The Village of Newark has been awarded a New York State Canalway Grant. The program provides funding for projects that further the goals and objectives of the New York State Canal Recreationway Plan, such as raising public awareness of the historical and current impact of the canal, expanding community engagement and participation in canal programs, and increasing investment in the canal to generate economic and cultural benefits.
Previous improvements along the canal such as murals, a bike repair station, and an Interpretative Center with full amenities have demonstrated Newark’s commitment to canal development, which made the Village an ideal candidate for grant funding.
In keeping with the community’s comprehensive plan and downtown revitalization efforts,
plans for the $150,000 matching grant include widening and paving the currently segmented canal trail, adding bike racks and benches, repurposing period street lights removed from South Main Street, as well as taking measures to prevent erosion.
Mayor Taylor stated that he was excited to receive the grant and to further improve the experience of residents and visitors along Newark’s segment of the Erie Canal.
