LATEST: 11 being assisted by Red Cross after devastating fire in E. Bloomfield at Valley Motel

One firefighter was sent to the hospital and at least 10 people were displayed after more than a dozen fire companies battled a massive fire in East Bloomfield overnight.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Thursday a little after midnight – first responders were called to the Valley Motel located at 7013 State Route 5&20 in East Bloomfield for a structure fire.

Upon arrival, fire companies and law enforcement discovered heavy smoke coming from the southernmost apartment at the Valley Motel.

Law enforcement went door-to-door evacuating the other units, which were all attached. A total of 13 fire companies responded to the scene, which included East Bloomfield, West Bloomfield, Farmington, Ionia, Cheshire, Honeoye, Victor, Naples, Manchester, Bristol, Shortsville, Lima, and Mendon.

The weather conditions made it extremely difficult to contain the fire, as temperatures were well-below zero.

As result, the fire spread rapidly destroying the entire Valley Motel.

One firefighter was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

The American Red Cross says a Disaster Action Team consisting of volunteers responded to the fire, providing immediate emergency assistance for 11 people. Red Cross assistance typically includes funding for temporary housing, food and clothing as needed, and specially-trained Disaster Mental Health volunteers are available to help those affected deal with the emotional aspect of their disaster.

They say affected families will meet with caseworkers in the coming days to work on a long-term recovery plan.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
