Mya Latini has been busy making Valentines. She isn’t the only one. Her homemade cards — more than a dozen — are among thousands of colorful, creative displays of heartfelt appreciation going this week to area veterans.
Cards are still arriving at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center, where Mya, 7, added hers for the 2019 annual National Salute to Veteran Patients.
On Thursday, Valentine’s Day, volunteers will distribute the cards to vets throughout the VA on Fort Hill Avenue. This entire week, volunteers — from school and community groups and businesses along with individuals and others — are participating in the National Salute that reaches both inpatient and outpatient vets.
Observed nationwide the week of Valentine’s Day, the National Salute to Veteran Patients underscores caring and appreciation for veterans of the U.S. armed services.
Nationwide, more than 9 million veterans are cared for in VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, nursing homes and VA programs.
The Salute encourages citizens and organizations to help the VA in its care for veterans through volunteering and other philanthropic efforts through VA Voluntary Service.
