EARLY (MORNING) EXIT: Newark Reds fall to Odyssey in Class B1 final at BCA (w/ video replay)

The Newark Reds had to get up early on Saturday morning to take on the Greece-Odyssey Leopards at 9:00 AM at the Blue Cross Arena with the Section V Class B1 Championship on the line.

Reds Coach Henry Kuperus had his team up even earlier, at 6:15 AM, for a shoot-around at their home gym before departing from Rochester. Still, Newark was unable to shake off the morning cobwebs as Odyssey jumped out to a 24-12 lead after the first quarter and expanded their lead to 40-23 at the halftime break. The Leopards wouldn’t look back as they captured the Class B1 Championship with a 69-40 win and the Reds saw their season end with a mark of 18-4 shortly before 10:30 AM.

Newark was sloppy with the basketball most of the game committing 19 turnovers to just 8 for Odyssey. The most telling statistic was the 25 points the Leopards scored off of Newark turnovers while the Reds scored zero points off of Odyssey turnovers. The Reds also shot a paltry 17% (3-17) from long range and could only muster 28% shooting from the field.

Greece-Odyssey was led by 17 points from tournament MVP Jayden Hartsfield while point guard Travon Harper scored 12 to go along with 4 assists and three steals.

Newark was led by senior Jayden Peters who scored 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds while fellow season Mason VanDeMortel scored 9 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

Odyssey will play Wellsville, who defeated Wayland-Cohocton,  in the NYS Far West Regional scheduled for Wednesday.
