This isn’t the first award for Belhurst Castle and Winery in Geneva. But the latest accolade for the historic hotel and winery overlooking Seneca Lake puts this Finger Lakes attraction on the global stage. Wine Enthusiast — international marketer of wines, spirits, food and travel — has named Belhurst Castle and Winery its favorite wine hotel in the U.S.A.
Belhurst shares in a list of seven standouts from around the world. These “most unique global hotel finds” Wine Enthusiast named cover those in Portugal, Australia, Chile, Spain, Argentina, and Poland.
“To receive recognition as one of the world’s best wine hotels and the only one in the U.S. by Wine Enthusiast is a great honor,” said Belhurst owner Duane Reeder. “This recognition of Belhurst brings even more recognition to the Finger Lakes region.”
Home to more than 130 wineries and nearly 10,000 acres of vineyard, the region last fall won best in the nation for its wine industry and earned high honors in several categories in USA Today’s 10 Best competition. Before that, Thrillist Travel travel advisor named the Finger Lakes the number-one wine region to visit nationally in a ranking by a panel of seven sommeliers from award-winning wine bars and restaurants in cities from Miami to St. Louis and Boston.
At the Belhurst, attention from Wine Enthusiast began with an email from one of the magazine’s editors. There were questions about Belhurst history, operations and offerings. Within two weeks, folks at Belhurst received the good word.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Properties, the Belhurst has also been voted one of the Most Romantic Places in New York State, according to the Belhurst website.
Here’s what Wine Enthusiast published about the Belhurst — a place well known to those who live and work in Ontario County and the Finger Lakes region, and a place now known to the world.
