Feds, police uncover meth after man on probation detained in Newark home

A man was arrested in Newark Thursday evening after federal probation officers said they found methamphetamine-making materials and suspected methamphetamine at his home.

Newark Village Police were called to a home on West Union Street to help U.S. Federal Probation officers, DEC officers and New York State Police.

Probation officers were doing a home visit for Richard McWhirt, 38, when they found chemicals and materials commonly used for manufacturing methamphetamine.

The house, vehicles, shed, and shoreline of barge canal were processed by the Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team.

Suspected methamphetamine was taken to be analyzed in a laboratory and McWhirt was detained officers and held on a federal probation violation warrant.
