Wayne County Sheriff’s Office changes policies after body cam footage shown at gathering

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is changing its policies after two former deputies showed body camera footage during a holiday get-together.

Two former sergeants, Andrea and Scott Knapp, showed footage from the department’s body cameras during a gathering on Dec. 26, 2018 at headquarters, according to Sheriff Barry Virts. The sergeants are spouses.

The videos included footage of people who were intoxicated, a foot chase and two taser deployments. Internal policy prohibits viewing the videos outside of a professional capacity.

“They [the videos] aren’t for personal pleasure, they aren’t to belittle anyone, they are another tool in our tool box, our resources to do our job,” Virts said.

Virts said he didn’t know about the gathering and didn’t know the videos were shown to 18 deputies who were in attendance.

The deputies attended the gathering at different times during their shift. Virts said they were under the command of their superiors – which would have been the Knapps.
