Man admits to using homemade pickax and crossbow pistol to kill fish in Cayuga Inlet

A man admitted to law enforcement that he used a pickax and a crossbow pistol to kill fish from the Cayuga Inlet in the Town of Ithaca in mid-April.

State troopers responded to a trespassing complaint that led to the arrest, authorities said. Officers found a man with a large quantity of suckers, a native fish that spawns in shallow rivers and streams in the early spring.

They then contacted an environmental conservation officer from the state Department of Environmental Conservation because of violations of state environmental conservation law, officers said. The man told officers he used the pickax to take 42 fish and the crossbow pistol to take two fish.

Authorities said he tried to justify his actions by saying he was helping the DEC by removing the suckers because the suckers eat trout eggs.
