Water level inches up on Lake Ontario as rains continue to fall

As homeowners and businesses brace for potential flooding, the sandbags are a sign of what could be coming.

As of this week, Lake Ontario’s water level stands at just over 248 feet.

In Monroe County, 170,000 sandbags have been filled. There are also 30 operational pumps and 500 feet of aqua dams that have been laid down along the shoreline.

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said any boat or vessels on waterways in the town of Greece – Braddock Bay, Buttonwood Creek, Salmon Creek, and Lake Ontario – must not exceed 5 mph.

Monroe County has already declared a state of emergency to free up additional resources related to potential flooding.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday an additional 100 New York National Guard members are being deployed across several counties in anticipation of possible flooding along the lakeshore. That includes communities in Wayne County, where a state of emergency has been declared along the lakeshore as well.
