Rushville driver ticketed after striking two kids in busy Canandaigua crosswalk

On August 13th at approximately 3:50 p.m., officers with the Canandaigua Police Department responded to South Main Street at Coy Street for the report of two children struck in a crosswalk by a vehicle.

A 7-year old male and a 9-year old female, both from Middlesex, were crossing South Main Street in the crosswalk with their grandmother when a vehicle being operated by 27-year old Mathew R. Gambino of Rushville struck them in the passing lane.

Pursuant to the investigation, it was determined that prior to the collision, Gambino, who was traveling southbound in the passing lane, had passed several vehicles that had stopped in the driving lane for the children in the crosswalk.

As a result of the collision, both children were thrown several feet into the roadway and subsequently transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.  Their injuries did not appear to be serious at the time, according to police.

Gambino was not injured in the collision.  He was issued traffic tickets for Failing to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk and for Passing a Stopped Vehicle at a Crosswalk.

Canandaigua Police were assisted at the scene by the Canandaigua Emergency Squad, the Canandaigua Fire Department, and the New York State Police.
