It’s complicating a growing teacher shortage in New York.

More teachers appear to be leaving the profession – as fewer students take it up.

A growing number of teachers say they can’t stay on the job and pay off their loans. The end result means nearly every district in Monroe County is struggling to find teachers.

Most teachers will tell that the profession is a calling. Adam Eck first felt the spark from his eighth-grade math teacher.

“I wanted to be just like him when I grew up,” he said. “And that was it. I was going to be a teacher.”
