DROUGHT OVER: Silver Creek defeats SFCC to win 2019 Canal Cup

The 2019 Canal Cup at Silver Creek Golf Club had an ending unlike any other in event history.

Silver Creek celebrated their first win, ending a drought that spanned more than a dozen years. As much as the win was unlikely, the team from Waterloo was ready for that victory – as they put together one of their best performances to date.

Dry conditions, heavy rough, and fast greens made for a battle at Silver Creek.

A total of 12 points were up for grabs in a mix of scramble and best ball matches.

After the morning session concluded – Silver Creek and SFCC were tied at 3-3.

It required the players from Silver Creek to dig in and fight for enough points in the afternoon session to clinch victory.

And they did. George Mander and Bummer Felice secured the final point, sealing victory for Silver Creek.

The final score was 6.5-5.5.

It was Silver Creek Team Captain Jeff Kapps’ first victory leading the squad from Waterloo. SFCC team captain Ben Wong graciously relinquished the Cup, which will remain on display at Silver Creek Golf Club until the 2020 playing of the Canal Cup.

The win on Saturday ushered in new confidence for Silver Creek; and a new era for Canal Cup competition.

Despite bringing fresh faces to keep their title streak in-tact, SFCC was outmatched and outplayed in Waterloo. They head back to Seneca Falls with renewed focus on competing in 2020.

For now though, Silver Creek celebrates a well-earned victory; and looks ahead for the opportunity to repeat as Canal Cup Champions in 2020.
