Drone technology is being called the new frontier of aviation, and Central New York is on the cutting edge. Syracuse-based Nuair operates one of 7 drone test sites in the country, where companies can come to test their drones and drone-related products, and in some cases they also get tested there for needed federal licensing to operate.
Nuair is hosting a drone symposium this week, at Turning Stone Casino. 300 attendees, from all over the country and from regulators (NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration) are talking about advances in the technology and the industry.
Nuair Chief Operating Officer Tony Basile tells us drone technology includes flying the unmanned craft, but that’s only a small part of the growing technology: most drones are launched to collect data of some kind, so in addition to engineering, managing data and all its applications are also expanding job fields. Basile says 30 companies have added drone operations here in NY state already, bringing in 1800 jobs. He says the economic expansion thanks to drones could replace the jobs lost when manufacturing left the area.
