To address workforce barriers experienced by parents, the Ithaca Community Childcare Center will undergo a $3.9 million expansion.
The project will expand capacity and services, and provide school and part-day toddler and prekindergarten programming at the child care center, 579 Warren Road.
The expansion will add 7,375 square feet and renovate 2,436 square feet of existing space at the center, according to Empire State Development.
Construction will include additional classrooms and a gross motor space. The front entrance and offices will be relocated for better security, and operations will be centralized to respond to the growing demand for quality and affordable child care in the greater Ithaca area.
“Currently, there is an inadequate amount of child care in our area,” said Sherri Koski, Ithaca Community Childcare Center executive director. “Northeast Elementary, Cayuga Heights Elementary and the YMCA have waiting lists. If we were to close, it would exacerbate the shortage. There would be no where else for people to go.
