New York officially raises tobacco, e-cig age from 18 to 21

Effective Wednesday, anyone who wants to purchase tobacco or electronic cigarettes in New York must be 21 years of age or older.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill changing the age from 18 to 21 into law in July.

The age change applies to traditional cigarettes as well as electronic cigarettes and vaporizers. According to Department of Health data, 27 percent of high school students in New York State are now using e-cigarettes.

Cuomo said the decision was made to prevent more tobacco products from “getting into the hands of our youth”.
